The poll on the best player in Europe was initiated by the editors of the 'France Football' in 1956. The rules changed in 1995 allowing to participate for the non-European players playing in Europe. Twelve years later the players from all over the world could also participate.
Stanley Matthews (UK) was the first to win in 1956.
