Famous Brazilian player Romario was elected to the upper house of the Parliament after receiving about 4.7 million votes.
48-year-old Socialist Party politician (Romario was a congressman since 2010) received the support of 63.4 per cent of votes. His nearest competitor Cesar Maia got 20.5 per cent of votes.
After ending his football player career Romario did not leave sport completely; he attended the world championships in beach volleyball. Also, he sharply criticized preparations for this year's World Cup in Brazil. He claimed that there were corruption cases during stadiums´ modernization process. Besides, Romario condemned the high costs of this event and poor working conditions of the workers.
In the past, Romario was recognized as the best world player for three times. During his career as a professional football player he scored more than a thousand goals. He has performed at PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and clubs of Rio de Janeiro: Vasco da Gama and Flamengo.
