The virtual award ceremony was held on Thursday evening in Zurich.
In the final of the vote, Robert Lewandowski overtook Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Coaches and captains of national teams, journalists and Internet users vote in the FIFA competition.
"This is a great achievement for me as well as for my team. I would like to dedicate this award to my colleagues, team, coach and his assistants, the whole club" - said Lewandowski after receiving the FIFA The Best men's player 2020 statuette.
As emphasized by the Polish media, although Messi and Ronaldo are undoubtedly great players, this year they could not match the achievements of the Pole - the striker of Bayern Munich and the Polish national team.
Lewandowski won the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the German Cup with Bayern. He was also the top scorer in all these competitions.
This is the first Pole to be awarded the best footballer in the world.
