The front of the puck features the Sochi 2014 "patchwork quilt" in color, and the other side is in black and white. It took more than 20 sketches and 30 enhancements by the organizers to make the perfect puck for the most important ice hockey tournament in the world. On average up to 80 pucks are needed for one game. The preparation of pucks for a game involves freezing them for a few hours before the match in order to reduce friction and prevent rebound from the ice surface.
Russian Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretyak:
"The puck is one of the most important attributes and symbols of hockey. Fans of our sport often collect them, because, having been used in a major competition, everyone wants to retain a piece of the sports celebration and miracle. We want the puck that we are presenting you now to become a symbol of the victory of our team, and that at the stands we hear more and more the traditional Russian hockey cheer "Shaybu-shaybu!"
The President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko:
"Today we can reveal the official Sochi 2014 puck. I am sure that each of the pucks used on Sochi's Olympic ice, will give all the fans unforgettable moments and the hockey tournaments, which will be held at the Bolshoy Ice Dome and Shayba Arena, will be a real spectacle of the Winter Olympics in Sochi."
Olympic hockey pucks
Olympic hockey pucks, manufactured for hockey tournaments in Sochi, are made in a bright original design. On one side of the Sochi 2014 hockey puck, the patchwork quilt is applied in color together with the Sochi 2014 logo. The other side is designed in a restrained classic black and white style: it displays the Olympic rings, and the black and white patchwork quilt surrounded by an inscription XXII OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES, SOCHI 2014 in English.
The "patchwork quilt" on the front side determines the affiliation of the Sochi 2014 puck to the place where the match is being played. At hockey games in the Bolshoy Ice Dome, hockey pucks with a range of purple tones from the "patchwork quilt" will be used, and in the Shayba Arena, the pucks will use a blue range of color.
The Bolshoy Ice Dome, where the presentation of Sochi 2014 ice hockey pucks took place, will be the home for part of Sochi's Olympic hockey competitions, including the final two matches of the men's and women's tournaments.
Paralympic hockey pucks
The Paralympic hockey pucks of the Winter Games in Sochi are similar to the Olympic hockey pucks. The only difference is the Games logo on the "patchwork quilt." All the hockey pucks for the XI Paralympic Winter Games were made with a range of blue tones taken from the "patchwork quilt."
The program of the Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi will host the sledge ice hockey men's competition, in which one set of awards will be given out.
