On 30 July 2013 Meilutytė has won her first gold medal at the world swimming championships in Barcelona, Spain.

Rūta has claimed a new world record with an incredible time of 1.04:35 improving a record of Jessica Hardy (USA) by 0.010 seconds which claimed in 2009.

Meilutytė again swam faster than Hardy's previous record when she touched the finish line after 1.04:42.

The second place went to Yuliya Efimova (Russia), who has finished the race with the time of 1.05:02.

Bronze was handed to Jessica Hardy, the former record holder from the USA. She has finished the race with the time of 1.05:52.
