The President will attend the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics at the legendary Maracana stadium, see the performances of swimmers Giedrius Titenis and Rūta Meilutytė and watch – together with basketball fans from around the world – a match between Lithuanian and Brazilian men’s basketball teams in the Olympic Basketball Tournament.
“Our athletes – who will bring our country together, stop the time and fight for their country for two weeks – will make millions of people chant loudly the word LITHUANIA. This is the biggest and most important sports event for the country and a dream coming true for the athletes thanks to whom the Lithuanian tricolor flies high again,” Dalia Grybauskaitė said.
During her visit to Rio de Janeiro, the President will meet with Lithuanian Olympians in the Olympic Village and talk to foreign leaders at a reception held by Brazil’s acting President.
The Summer Olympic Games will take place for 31st time. This year more than 10,500 athletes from 206 countries will compete in 28 Olympic sports. The Lithuanian delegation will consist of 67 athletes.
