The most common type of laryngectomy, i.e. surgical removal of advanced laryngeal cancer, changes the patient’s voice dramatically and can be very disruptive to their normal life. To improve the quality of life of patients after laryngectomy, a team of researchers from Lithuania conducted a study using artificial intelligence (AI) to “clean” the speech of laryngectomy patients.

As technology and digitalization are moving forward, there is a pressing need to discuss and adapt the law to meet the challenges and needs of our times. On October 12th at Vilnius University (VU) Scholarly Communication and Information Centre was held an international scientific conference “The Digital Asset Revolution: Opportunities and Challenges” where legal scientists shared their knowledge and discussed technological issues emerging in securing privacy, ensuring property of data and digital assets and other areas of legal aspects.

In 2022, the Global Marketing programme at Vilnius University's (VU) Faculty of Economics and Business Administration received acclaim as Lithuania's leading marketing programme. This curriculum places a strong emphasis on both traditional and digital marketing, equipping students to assess business opportunities and thrive in today's interconnected global society. Global marketing cultivates specialists skilled in analysing markets, devising marketing plans, executing campaigns, and managing logistics, both locally and in a cross-cultural context.

Five interdisciplinary European universities, including Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB), University of Lund, University of Montpellier and University of Tampere, are collaborating for the third year in the DiHeco initiative. The main objective of this initiative is to overcome the challenges of telemedicine development.

According to rankings by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a global leader in providing services, analytics, and insights to the higher education sector wolrdwide, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) holds the 307th position out of 690 ranked universities in Europe, making the fourth best in Lithuania and placing it among the top 45 percent of universities on the continent.

On October 3rd, the robotics, electrification, and automation technology company ABB opened the electrical drives laboratory at the Faculty of Electronics Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH). In doing so, the company solidified its partnership with VILNIUS TECH, which aims to promote engineering sciences and technological progress in Lithuania.

This year the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University, in collaboration with partners, had the opportunity to host the 55th Annual Meeting of European Society for Paediatric Nephrology (ESPN) from September 28th to October 1st. During the weeklong event scientists and clinicians in Paediatric Nephrology, junior fellows, allied health professionals, industry partners, and other speakers from all around the world, in person or online, had the opportunity to present their own or listen to others’ research, discuss and exchange important ideas, establish new or strengthen existing connections within the medical and scientific communities.

A new unique building – Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) interdisciplinary prototyping laboratory centre M-Lab – has been erected in the heart of the KTU Student Campus. The building, which is poised to become a new highlight of the Campus and the city has preserved the architectural ideas of the former building, and is green outside and in – implementing sustainable architecture ideas and opening to the Gričiupis Park.

For two weeks, the VILNIUS TECH Sustainability School brought together numerous students from universities in Lithuania and across Europe to try and solve challenges related to ecology and sustainability. The finale of the Sustainability School showcased innovative ideas aimed at addressing pressing ecological issues affecting both businesses and society.

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was jointly awarded to the French scientist working in the US – Prof. Pierre Agostini, the Hungarian and Austrian scientist working in Germany – Prof. Ferenc Krausz, and the French scientist working in Sweden – Prof. Anne L’Huillier. They have been awarded the prize for the experimental methods they created to generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.
