![]() EducationKTU scientists develop advanced forest monitoring systems: will forests monitor themselves in the future?2025-03-12, 18:43“Forests are among the most important ecosystems in nature, constantly evolving, yet their monitoring is often delayed,” says Rytis Maskeliūnas, a professor at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU). Climate change, pests, and human activity are transforming forests faster than we can track them – some changes become apparent only when the damage is already irreversible. Dr. Akanimo Odon from Lancaster University (UK), where he serves as Head of African Strategic Partnerships, visited Vilnius University. On March 3, he gave a presentation to doctoral students and experienced researchers about internationalization and innovation in scientific research. The results of the 2024 call for proposals for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA PF) under Horizon Europe, the European Union’s framework programme for research and innovation, reveal that two grants have been awarded to Vilnius University (VU) applicants. Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin cancers, with over 300,000 new cases reported worldwide each year. In Europe, the number of diagnoses has been rising rapidly. However, early detection and advanced treatments can significantly improve survival rates. Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) are contributing to the development of a non-invasive melanoma treatment, using light and special dyes. In today’s world, where we face growing challenges related to climate change, urbanization, and resource management, satellite-based Earth observation has become an indispensable tool. This technology allows us to gather real-time information about our planet without physical contact with observed objects. But how does it work, and how is satellite monitoring used in Lithuania? You wake up in an Old Town on the UNESCO World Heritage List – a city buzzing with innovation and ideas, where world-class education goes hand in hand with an unbeatable student experience. You grab a coffee at a trendy café filled with students from all over the world, then head to a lecture given by a professor who conducts groundbreaking research. Later, you walk through a historic university courtyard that looks as if it is straight out of a movie – because, fun fact, it actually is! VILNIUS TECH Strengthens STEAM Education in Schools by Enhancing Teachers’ Engineering Competencies2025-02-04, 18:54Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) has initiated a training program for teachers from various Lithuanian cities to strengthen their engineering competencies. This initiative marks a significant step in improving STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education in schools and addressing the shortage of qualified teachers. Vilnius University is launching a targeted call for a Young researchers' grant. The call is open until 7 March 2025. Applications should be submitted via the document management system "Avilys". If you do not have access to the system, another representative of the unit/faculty can submit the application for you (in this case, you can print the application, sign it and upload the signed PDF document into the system). In today’s healthcare environment, there is an increasing focus on improving the efficiency of rehabilitation processes, given the rising number of injuries and the need to return to active life more quickly. However, personalising individual needs is often a challenge, and innovative solutions are being sought to optimise these processes. The University of Padua has just launched the fifth edition of the Supporting TAlent in ReSearch@University of Padua – STARS@UNIPD 2025 call for proposals. This programme supports excellent 30-month research projects to be conducted in Padua, by outstanding Principal Investigators (PIs) of any age and nationality, choosing the University and one of its 32 Departments as their working base. |
