"The National Cyber Security Council which includes representatives from different authorities is vital for improving cyber security situation in Lithuania. It enables us to strengthen the cooperation between private and public sectors and among representatives of scientific institutions and thus to efficiently prepare ourselves for potential cyber threats," Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas said at the first meeting of the Cyber Security Council. According to the Minister, all sectors of Lithuania should do their share in ensuring cyber security.
Functions and work of the Cyber Security and Information Technologies Department of the Ministry of National Defence and the National Centre of Cyber Security, the two authorities shaping and implementing national cyber security policy, were presented to the Council, while delegates of the Communications Regulatory Authority presented amendments to the regulations concerning ensurement of security and integrity of public communications networks, publicly available electronic communications services and electronic information hosting.
The Council discussed the process of developing legislation for reinforcing the Law on Cyber security of Lithuania, the status of cyber security in Lithuania and representation of the country in multilateral formats.
The Cyber Security Council is a standing advisory authority conducting analysis of the status of cyber security provision and rendering advice regarding possible improvements on the status to national authorities shaping and implementing cyber security policy, to public administration bodies managing state information resources, providers of publicly available electronic communications services and public communications networks, to businesses working in this area, and to scientific and academic institutions.
Chaired by Vice Minister of National Defence Ramūnas Usonis, the Council comprises 24 members from the Ministries of National Defence, Energy, Transport and Communications, Justice, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Economy, Office of the Government, Communications Regulatory Authority, Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau, Central Bank, State Data Protection Inspectorate, Lietuvos Energija Energy Company Group, Vilnius and Kaunas Universities of Technology, INFOBALT, Lithuanian banks, and associations of heating and water suppliers.
