The Lux Film Prize is an award given out by MEPs to promote European cinema, make films accessible to larger audiences across languages and cultures, help promising productions circulate beyond their national market and encourage debate about values and social issues across Europe.
The 10 films, selected by the Lux Prize's selection panel, cover a range of genres, stories, artistic approaches and messages with a special focus on exceptionally talented young directors.
The following 10 list have been nominated (in alphabetical order):
- 45 years: Andrew Haigh (United Kingdom)
- A Perfect Day: Fernando León de Aranoa (Spain)
- Hrútar (Rams): Grímur Hákonarson (Iceland, Denmark)
- La Loi du Marché (The Measure of a Man): Stéphane Brizé, France
- Mediterranea: Jonas Carpignano (Italy, United States, Germany, France, Qatar)
- Mustang: Deniz Gamze Ergüven (France, Germany, Turkey, Qatar)
- Saul Fia (Son of Saul): László Nemes (Hungary)
- Toto Si Surorile Lui (Toto and his Sisters): Alexander Nanău (Romania, Hungary, Germany)
- Urok (The Lesson): Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov (Bulgaria, Greece)
- Zvizdan (The High Sun): Dalibor Matanić (Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia)
The official selection was revealed on 5 July by Pavel Svoboda, chair of Parliament's legal affairs committee; Bogdan Wenta, member of the culture committee; Lux Prize coordinator Doris Pack and Karel Och, the artistic director of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and member of the Lux Prize's selection panel.
Three of these 10 films will be selected for the short-list and be shown in a subtitled version in every EU member state during the Lux Film Days this autumn. The winning film will be subtitled in all of the EU's 24 official languages while a special version for the visually and hearing impaired will be created as well.
The award ceremony will take place at the end of the year in Strasbourg.
Audience Mention for 2014 Lux Prize
The film of the 2014 Lux Prize competition that received the highest number of votes from audiences across Europe has also been announced: Slovenian film Class Enemy by Rok Bicek.
