Internet governance is a term used to describe the global arrangements that ensure the proper functioning, accessibility and technological standards for the internet, making it work across all countries. Issues such as ensuring equal access for all and security are discussed every year at the global level at the Internet Governance Forum, bringing together governments, industry and civil society.
Th European Parliament adopted a resolution on 11 February that calls on the UN General Assembly to renew the mandate of the Internet Governance Forum, strengthen its resources and maintain the multistakeholder model of internet governance.
Andrus Ansip, the commissioner responsible for the digital single market, welcomed the Parliament's support: "Our main common objective is to make sure that internet remains a truly global resource, free from being captured by few or by specific economic or political interests. Internet is for everyone."
The next meeting of the Internet Governance Forum will take place in Brazil on 10-13 November.
