Prof Maskeliūnas and his team from the Department of Multimedia Engineering at KTU was awarded Discovery of the Year for the development of practical technologies and their application in medicine. The team was awarded for a new invention to help identify early signs of Parkinson’s disease, an interactive game iTrain to help care for people after a stroke, and an innovation BiomacVR for patient rehabilitation after a stroke. Maskeliūnas and his team work closely with medical professionals, conducts a wide range of research with international partners, and develops innovations, which have practical applications.
This is not the first year that Maskeliūnas has been nominated for LRT’s Award of the Year. In 2021, he was nominated together with his PhD student Modupe Odusami for a new method to detect the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. The method makes it easier to predict the onset of Alzheimer’s from brain images, as their algorithm can distinguish between pictures of the affected brain with more than 99% accuracy by analysing magnetic resonance images. This method is more efficient and accurate than those used previously.
This year, LRT awarded the following categories: Discovery of the Year, State Builder of the Year, Business Leadership of the Year, Cultural Phenomenon of the Year, Future of the Year, Personality of the Year, Ambassador of the Year, and Civic Initiative of the Year.
Last year, the LRT Awards honoured Meda Surdokaitė, a student of the KTU GIFTed Talent Academy. She received the Future of the Year award for her achievements in the European Union Young Scientists Competition.
