"The Summer School of the Universities of Vilnius and Cambridge is a new level of academic cooperation with the University of Cambridge in terms of content and format, which will open up new opportunities for international relations," says the organizer of the summer school, Dr. Inga Zakšauskienė.
The project aims to provide a platform for Lithuanian and British researchers to share experiences in the Baltic region research field, strengthen mutual academic ties and discover new prospects for future cooperation. Lecturers from Vilnius, Klaipėda, and Cambridge universities, as well as master’s and doctoral students, will attend the summer school.
During the summer school, VU will host a conference on 12-13 July where VU Rector Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas and the Dean of the Faculty of History Dr. Loreta Skurvydaitė will give a welcome address. Klaipėda University (KU) professor Klaipėda University (KU) professor Vasilijus Safronovas, VU researchers Dr. Kęstutis Kilinskas, Dr. Inga Zakšauskienė, Andrius Grodis, as well as representatives of the University of Cambridge Prof. Brendan Simms and Dr. Charles Clarke, the former adviser of the British Prime Minister Tony Blair, will present research on the history and geopolitics of the Baltic States and Lithuania. Researchers from Lithuanian and British universities will share their scientific experience and the latest research, reviewing the historical and security development of the Baltic region.

The summer school attendees will take part in the workshops held in the Lithuanian Special Archives where they will learn about the funds stored in the archive, the KGB activities related to the intelligence operations carried out by Great Britain in the region, and the publications based on the files of the Special Archives published in Lithuania and Western countries. In cooperation with the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania, the participants of the summer school from Vilnius and Cambridge universities will participate in the roundtable discussion “Challenges facing the Baltic region’s security. Now and then” where the Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania Dr. Arvydas Anušauskas, British Ambassador Bryan Oley, Dr. Charles Clarke, Head of British Chamber of Commerce Rasa Ščiukinaitė, and other researchers, media representatives and politicians researching the topic and making decisions on the geopolitical issues in the Baltic States will discuss regional issues.
