Those aiming to study PhD at KTU can submit their applications to either state-funded or self-funded positions. The first-year doctoral students at state-funded positions get scholarships of 760 Euro whilst the second, third and fourth-year students are issued a scholarship of 880 Euro every month.
The main admission to PhD studies in science fields coordinated by KTU takes place from March till June. Applications are submitted online until 22nd June, 1 PM. The deadline only applies to those candidates whose foreign academic qualification documents (diplomas) are already recognised by Lithuanian Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education or those that do not require academic recognition.
KTU offers doctoral studies in 19 fields of science in technological, natural, social sciences and humanities. Doctoral studies cover study modules, research, preparation, and defence of the doctoral dissertation. The Doctoral degree is awarded to a doctoral student who completes the doctoral program and defends their dissertation.
Additional funding and international opportunities
Doctoral students have many opportunities to acquire international experience while conducting research at foreign institutions, as well as receive financial support for various internships, summer and winter schools, or international conferences.
Furthermore, one can receive additional funding for studies, dissertation and scientific article preparation, and research purposes from the KTU Doctoral Fund. Another fund, the KTU Fund of International Scientific Events, supports attendance at international science conferences and events.
One of the easiest ways to acquire international experience is by using the opportunities provided by the Erasmus+ programme. One can travel abroad for partial studies or internship at foreign science institutions, universities, organisations, or companies. Active doctoral students can check their expertise while attending various national and international contests for financial support or international internship opportunities, as well as receive financial stimulus for outstanding scientific publications or activity.
While studying PhD, one may also be employed in national or international scientific projects.
KTU PhD students – from more than 25 different countries
In comparison with the situation five years ago, the number of applicants from abroad has increased significantly – in recent years, almost half of the applicants to doctoral studies are foreigners. Foreign candidates who choose KTU for their PhD studies, have obtained master’s degrees in other countries, or are graduates of KTU or other higher education institution in Lithuania.
In nine fields of study, KTU doctoral students have the opportunity to receive a double Doctor of Science degree under existing contracts with the University of Bologna (Italy), the Al-Farabi National University of Kazakhstan, and the Technical University of Košice (Slovakia). Thus, while studying in both institutions at once, they can improve their competencies, as well as acquire valuable knowledge and skills required for research. Those who have successfully defended their dissertation can obtain diplomas from both institutions.
Currently, there are 320 doctoral students from 26 countries studying at KTU, and foreign nationals make up about 24 per cent of all PhD students. This trend shows that KTU is a prominent and strong university in the international arena. The activities of the University in the implementation of the European University Networks project – ECIU University – also contributed to the growing internationality of doctoral studies.
Moreover, international opportunities motivate candidates – by working in international teams, and learning from professionals in their fields and internships at the best universities in the world students receive valuable experience. In addition, with the development of the ECIU Virtual Research Institute, doctoral students will be able to conduct research and attend internships not only at partner universities but also contribute to solving various challenges.
