During the meeting at KTU Santaka Valley, the University’s community will have a chance to discuss science and education issues with the HE Governor General of Canada. Commander-in-Chief of Canada, Julie Payette is the official representative of Queen Elisabeth II in Canada.
The day before the visit to KTU, Julie Payette will meet with the Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and the Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.
“Canada shares strong relationships with both Lithuania and Estonia, based on common values and cooperation. This visit is a chance for the Governor General to deepen our people-to-people ties and look for ways we can work more closely together. We will continue to stand united with Lithuania and Estonia, and keep working with these partners and other NATO Allies to advance peace and stability around the world”, says Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, in the release.
Before becoming Governor General, Julie Payette was an astronaut, engineer, scientific broadcaster and corporate director.
From 1992 to 2013, Julie Payette worked as an astronaut and flew two missions in space. Ms Payette flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1999, becoming the first Canadian to board the ISS. she visited space station again ten years later as a mission specialist aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour. Ms Payette also served many years as CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) at NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, and was Chief Astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency.
Ms Payette can converse in six languages and holds a commercial pilot license. The Governor General is well respected for her work in developing policies to promote science and technology.
