One school course lasts for two weeks and attracts students from all over the world. Hermann Schmickler, the main CAS-CERN organiser emphasises that the students should have certain knowledge before starting the School.
The topic will be related to radiofrequency equipment technologies
There are two types of schools organised by CERN: the general knowledge course and the advanced course. The school also runs a thematic course that addresses specific issues such as technology theory. The Kaunas workshop will address the topic of Radio Frequency Equipment Technologies.
“Accelerator technology and the field as the university’s subject are only analysed in a few universities around the world but even then, the highest level of knowledge is not achieved. Thus, this school provides an opportunity to meet experts in this field who share their well-established experience. The interest in CERN schools is extremely high today; students come from all around the world, with 70 per cent coming from Europe”, says Schmickler.
He emphasises that in order to get the most from the CERN Accelerator School, one must have a general understanding of the topic. The knowledge can be obtained not only at general CERN school courses but also while studying independently, reading related literature or at the university.
The specialised equipment will be brought to Kaunas
According to Bronė Narkevičienė, the Dean of the KTU Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, CAS will provide a unique opportunity for the students to learn from renowned professionals of the field, to get hands-on working experience with the specialised equipment, which will be brought to Kaunas by CERN representatives.
Narkevičienė says that students will have an opportunity not only to learn theory and practice but also to take part in a cultural programme with colleagues from foreign countries. CERN Accelerator School will invite high school students and teachers from Kaunas schools.
CERN aims to explore and understand the world of elementary particles physics; the focus of the organisation is not only fundamental research but also its applications in innovative technology. In this way, CERN is shaping the future of people and laying the foundations for new inventions. According to CERN representatives, without investigation, we wouldn’t be aware of quantum physics and such incredible results would not have been achieved.
