Earlier MRU Rector Assoc. Prof. Algirdas Monkevičius has said that two strong Vilnius universities can have a common vision, raise and achieve ambitious tasks, while taking advantage of interdisciplinary and interdimensional possibilities.
"Technological studies and research areas along with law, economics, management, public security and management, psychology, educational and other social sciences can create a studies and research quality, which is needed at this time for the good of social welfare and increasing of global competitiveness," the Rector said.
Rector Monkevičius noted that according to the proposed 2018-2021 universities' reform plan, it is planned not to eliminate, but consolidate duplicate studies programmes of both universities. Unique programmes would not only be preserved, but also strengthened and developed.
Integrating MRU and VGTU in Vilnius, along with VU, there would be two strong Law Schools in Lithuania, which also are supported by Lithuania's community of lawyers.
"By exploiting the advantages of both universities, universities can create a great deal of synergy between technological and social sciences, consolidate and strengthen technological and social science studies programmes and strengthen competitiveness in the international studies and research sphere," said Rector Monkevičius.
He also emphasized that consolidation of universities will allow to further develop priority future public technological and state security research areas. Both universities have considered a vision of a technological university with a strong social sciences nucleus. Lithuania's Seimas should decide on the issue during its fall session.
