On Friday, Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius met with Eugenijus Jesinas and Audrius Jurgelevicius, the heads of education trade unions to discuss the issues of education funding, informs The Baltic Course.

During the meeting the representatives expressed their concern about the funds that might have to be returned to the budget due to the decrease in the number of pupils.

"According to the budgetary principles, LTL 33 millions (EUR 9.6 million) of pupil basket funds should be returned to the budget next year due to the decrease in the number of pupils. According to the representatives of trade unions, these funds are sorely needed (). Therefore, it was agreed to amend the provisions of the law when planning the next year budget in autumn so the funds could remain for purposeful usage in the area of general education," said Butkevicius.
