The programme aims to educate specialists who would, after receiving solid linguistic training, conduct research on multilingualism and disseminate their results not only within the academia but also amongst the different stakeholder groups, including politicians. With its geographical focus on the entire Baltic-Sea region, the programme stands out from other sociolinguistic Master’s degree programmes in Europe due to the amount of languages and societies it covers.
Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism aims at preparing qualified experts of Nordic and Baltic sociolinguistics, who would have profound theoretical knowledge in the field of sociolinguistics and would be prepared methodologically to conduct research on a wide array of multilingualism topics, including questions of language policies and supporting the maintenance of minority and immigrant languages. The international dimension of SoMu is enhanced through intercultural academic environment, student mobility abroad, and through courses lectured by prominent specialists and scholars of international repute.
A lot of attention is paid to student mobility. During their four-semester studies, students study in three different universities: the first semester is taught in Kaunas, the second one in Mainz, the third in Stockholm or Tartu, and the fourth one at the university of the student’s Master’s thesis’ supervisor.
The graduates of this programme will be qualified to work in various international, national and local institutions and organizations (both public and private); to work with international and national projects related to multilingualism, language planning and policy; also, counseling on multilingualism issues at political and cultural institutions, including the EU institutions, or continue their doctoral studies in intercultural communication, sociolinguistics, multilingualism, and other fields.
The program is taught entirely in English (120 ECTS credits), therefore, prospective applicants are expected to have good English language skills (B2 level of the CEFR). In addition, a Bachelor’s degree certificate of study obtained in the humanities or social sciences is required. Applicants must have obtained at least 30 ECTS credits in the field of linguistics or philology.
