According to data received by the ministry from municipalities, the strike involves nearly a tenth of all education institutions, however, not all academic staff of the schools on strike.
The data suggests teachers are on strike in 201 schools of general education, 30 pre-school institutions and two informal education institutions.
A total of over 2,300 education institutions operate in the country's 60 municipalities, including 1,200 schools of general education, more than 700 pre-school education institutions and 360 informal education institutions.
On Monday, trade unions failed to agree with government officials on termination of the strike, with some of the teachers set to continue the strike until Wednesday, at least – the scheduled next phase of the negotiations. Some teachers are determined to continue the strike for a few weeks, i.e., until the start of the parliament's spring session on March 10.
Teacher trade unions opened the indefinite strike on Monday in demand of higher wages and other reforms. To make their demands known, teachers held warning strikes last December and a protest rally in Vilnius last week.
According to data provided by the Statistics Department, an average monthly salary for teachers in Lithuania is 823.4 euros. However, a third of all teachers work part time, and about a tenth have fewer than nine weekly classes.
