"The state is consistently and purposefully promoting investment, which is obvious from Lithuania's ratings in the international arena. We must make sure that only transparent and responsible investors, who also meet the national security interests, invest in economy sectors of strategic importance. As a result, companies of uncertain background which are possibly engaged in activities that are contrary to the country's national security, cannot operate in strategic economy sectors or next to objects of strategic importance, the president said.
As reported, leader of the Seimas Opposition Andrius Kubilius says the investment agreement conducted between Siauliai City Municipality and creators of the so called string transport is a threat to national security. He addressed Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius and Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas over "an investment project signed by social democratic heads of Siauliai city. Kubilius says a company of opaque capital, most probably Russian, plans to build a laboratory for trains that run "on string railway" near NATO air force base in Zokniai".
"Taking into account the strategic significance of Zokniai airfield the initiative must be stopped immediately. It must be investigated who the initiators of the very dubious project are," said Kubilius. He also raised suspicions that the project favoured by some may be entangled in corruption.
