“We appreciate the European Investment Bank’s contribution to providing urgent financial support to Ukraine and affected countries to mitigate the negative consequences of the war. We support the EIB’s efforts and strong commitment to continue supporting Ukraine. The establishment of the new EU4U Fund enables the Bank further to implement urgent infrastructure projects in Ukraine, contributing to the recovery needs of the country in the short term. Lithuania is one of the first countries to announce its contribution to the Fund allocating EUR 10 million. We hope that other EU countries will follow our example “, notes Vice-Minister of Finance M. Liutvinskas.
Taking into account the European Council’s call of 15 December 2022 to reinforce the support for Ukraine’s critical infrastructure needs, the EIB has proposed to implement the European Union (EU) initiative for Ukraine, including the establishment of the EU4U Fund. On 29 March 2023, the EIB’s Board of Directors approved the initiative and the establishment of the Fund. The EU4U Fund will allow the EIB, as a bank of the European Union, to continue financing urgent and important infrastructure reconstruction and economic resilience projects in Ukraine, pending the establishment of a permanent assistance mechanism for Ukraine at European Union level.
On 7 June 2023, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania decided to allocate EUR 10 million to the EIB’s EU4U Fund.
Lithuania became a member of the EIB in 2004. Lithuania currently owns EUR 437.6 million of authorised capital (0.18 %). In total, the EIB has provided loans amounting to EUR 4.6 billion to finance the projects in Lithuania. In 2022, the EIB Group invested around EUR 300 million in Lithuania.
