According to Dovydas Palaima, General Manager at LTG Infra Rail Baltica Management, works are becoming more intensive in the most developed section of Rail Baltica from Kaunas to the Latvian border: “We actively announce new procurements of construction works, next year, as soon as the weather allows it, formation of the track bed will begin in Jonava District.” In the nearest future, it is planned to issue another call for tenders for the formation of the track bed and the construction of engineering structures in the section of Kaunas–Šveicarija Village.
The selected company will have to prepare a track bed of about 17 km and build 3 railway bridges on the section from Šėta to Ramygala. All electrical, municipal, and engineering networks located in the area of the project will be redesigned, secured, and/or transferred, electricity and amelioration networks will also be redesigned, and drainage will be installed. Culverts will have to be constructed for safe animal migration, crossings for animals, and passages for amphibians.
The railway line under construction will cross a district road and two local roads. The contractor will have to build a car viaduct, 2 road bridges above the river Obelis and build 13 local access roads.
The contract with the successful tenderer is planned to be signed in the second half of 2023 and the planned works are expected to be completed within two years.
Rail Baltica is the largest railway infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic States, which will build a fully electrified double-track European gauge railway connecting Warsaw, Kaunas, Vilnius, Panevėžys, Riga, Pärnu, and Tallinn.
