“The purpose of the Sandbox is not only to promote transport innovations. We aim to create the entire environment necessary for the implementation of innovations, the conditions for their evolution — from an idea to real application. It is also essential that the Sandbox initiative is targeted at all sectors where 5G-based technologies will create high value-added jobs, promote robotisation, automation, and new business models in the country. It is very important to hear the experience of colleagues from the UK at the event”, says Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications, who will open the international event in Vilnius.
The presentation of the Sandbox is organised by the Ministry in cooperation with the Embassy of the United Kingdom (UK) in Vilnius. It will be attended by British entrepreneurs, representatives of start-ups and scientists from Coventry University, recognised as one of the most modern in the country. It is believed that the presentations by representatives of the UK business and science about good project practices and challenges will become a driving force for Lithuania, which has taken the road to transport innovation.
“UK colleagues have already gained extensive experience and practice in applying innovative 5G technology solutions in various sectors. From 2017 to 2022, they implemented the 5G Testbeds and Trials programme, which is similar to the transport innovation Sandbox programme currently being developed in Lithuania,” notes A. Vaiciukevičiūtė.
Lithuania plans to implement projects in air- and seaports, railways, logistics, smart cities, sustainable mobility and other areas, while the Sandbox funds will be available for business and science.
EUR 24.5 million from the Recovery and Resilience Plan is foreseen to ensure the continuity of the initiative to attract ideas from business, science and their consortia.
It is planned that the call for Sandbox projects, which is making Lithuania known as a transport innovation laboratory, will be launched in autumn 2022 and project activities are planned to run until 2025.
The free Sandbox presentation event on Wednesday can also be attended remotely, but registration is required https://lt-5g-sandbox-info-day.b2match.io/
