Now different types of fertilisers can be loaded into two Post Panamax vessels at five or six 14.5 metre depth quays. It is said that the investment will not only ensure quality cargo handling but will cut loading times and improve the company's competitiveness in the market.
According to Director General of KLASCO Audrius Pauza, if the company used to load 4 million tonnes of fertilisers per year, now it will be able to load 6 million tonnes. Currently railway wagon unloading unit can handle 4 wagons. All loading processes have been automated and ship cargo handling efficiency is 1,600 tonnes per hour. After privatisation of the company in 1999 concern Achema Group invested more than LTL 350 million (EUR 100 million) in modernisation and development of KLASCO activities. KLASCO handled 12.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2013.
Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius who attended the opening ceremony of the new terminal of Klaipeda Stevedoring Company (KLASCO) said that it was significant for Lithuania's logistics and transport sectors, and for Klaipeda Seaport. "Transport sector accounts for around 12-14% of GDP. When geopolitical situation is becoming complicated investment is essential. I am pleased that private and state investment is directed towards areas bringing the most benefit and creating jobs, paying taxes. Therefore, today is an important day, talking about our economic situation and solving social problems," Butkevicius said.
