“We have to recognise that currently the Belarusian regime exploits civil aviation for manipulation. People are being misled and the consequences of this are seen at the borders of Lithuania, Poland and Latvia with Belarus. Efficient solution to this pressing issue is possible only if air transport carriers, international organisations and state leaders align their actions and find the best solutions together,” Vice Minister Skačkauskas comments.
The challenges facing the civil aviation in the 21st century are to be discussed during the meeting of the Permanent Commission of the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol). Vice Minister Skačkauskas is to highlight the illegal migrant crisis currently taking place at the Lithuanian and Polish borders with Belarus.
Skačkauskas is to meet with Director for EU International Affairs of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Jorge Dieguez. They are going to discuss the effect of Fit for 55 proposal on aviation, as well as illegal migration situation at Lithuanian, Polish and Latvian borders with the focus on the role of aviation in this crisis.
At the meeting with Marian Raluca, leader of the Brussels team of the International Road Transport Union, the Vice Minister will discuss the obligation to return trucks to the country of origin effective as of next year in the EU and share insights on other relevant matters for carriers.
At the meetings with Matthew Baldwin, Deputy Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Transport and Mobility, and Kristian Schmidt, Director of the Land Transport Department at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, Julius Skačkauskas is to discuss safety on Lithuanian roads, cycle paths development and practical questions with regard to the implementation of the Mobility Package provisions.
