“Our goal is to make Lithuania one of the best prepared countries for the electromobility boom by 2027. Electromobility is one of the most important goals of renewable energy: it will affect both public and private sectors. Therefore, we should lay the foundations for a sustainable transition to zero-emission transport,” says Minister of Energy Dainius Kreivys.
The plan will include the main orientations of electromobility for the upcoming decade and the conditions for a successful development. The Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Transport and Communications are responsible for the preparation of a common plan in accordance with the Law on Alternative Fuels (ADĮ) adopted in March.
“We must ensure that the development of the infrastructure of electric vehicles and all regulatory incentives are implemented in a clear, strategic and harmonious way with the coordination of the actions of public institutions, companies and municipalities. Only then every user will have more options during the transition to zero-emission transport,” says Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis.
By 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications plans to increase the number of electric vehicles in the country by 10 times (from 5000 to 50 000).
The ministers also discussed the preparation of the distribution network for the development of electromobility. The transport sector is currently the largest energy consumer in Lithuania, and this tendency will remain during the transition to electric transport. Since the development of electromobility will have a huge impact on the capabilities of the distribution networks, close cooperation with the operators of distribution networks is planned at technical level.
The ongoing transformation of the energy sector poses challenges for the development of the distribution network. Therefore, in order to properly prepare and effectively develop the electricity network, a study is planned to assess the eligibility and the preparedness of the network and the regulatory environment for the transformation of the energy sector, in this case, the upcoming development of electromobility.
