In the Letter of Intent the parties agreed on further promotion of international long-distance passenger rail services in Europe and on launching high-speed and overnight train services between European capitals, commercial and cultural centres.
“I am confident that this project will encourage passengers to rediscover convenient travel by train and serve as a basis for further passenger rail network development in Europe by contributing to the European Green Deal targets. For the Baltic region actively implementing Rail Baltica project it also provides a historical opportunity to engage in the operations of the entire European railway transport area and for our citizens a chance to enjoy the highest-quality communication with Europe,” Minister Skuodis said after signing the Letter of Intent.
The signatories expressed joint determination to grant political support to the new Trans Europ Express (TEE 2.0) strategy promoting climate change mitigation. International services development is to be facilitated by cooperation with interested railway companies, infrastructure managers and states.
The parties agreed on specific TEE 2.0 services that could be put into use by 2030. Rail Baltica, the project of strategic significance for Lithuania and the Baltic region, was also taken into account.
This Letter of Intent was the initiative of Germany who held Presidency of the Council of the EU last year.
The EU has designated 2021 as the European Year of Rail.
