The outgoing rotation of troops from the US battalion will be observed on Friday, using the new railway section.
The Lithuanian government endorsed its plans to construct a railway section to Pazeimene early last year, and the section of around 1 kilometer and a level-crossing was built by Vitras-S, part of Estonia railway services group Skinest Rail.
The work was funded by the Ministry of National Defense, and also the ministry and Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways), the state-owned railway company, shared the costs of the level-crossing's reconstruction.
The NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group was deployed in Lithuania in February, 2017 in response to Russia's aggression to Ukraine and its military activity in the region. The battalion in Lithuania is led by Germany and troops from other countries serve within the battalion, often bringing their own military equipment.
