The two companies have signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture, with talks on the matter expected to be completed in the near future, LG said.
LG Cargo CEO Egidijus Lazauskas says that while intermodal freight shipments have been growing in recent years, interest has surged in the wake of coronavirus-triggered disruptions to business logistic chains.
The project will focus on transporting semi-trailers and containers, and will connect Lithuanian, Polish and German freight terminals via railway lines, according to the CEO.
Around 50 mln tons of freight are transported between Lithuania and Poland annually, with railways accounting for a mere 1% of the total volume. Some 2.5 mln heavy goods vehicle cross the countries' borders each year, according to the press release.
