It built up due to an outflow of net other investment. In January-March 2014, the net investment outflow (746.7 million litas) resulted from strong growth in other investment foreign assets.
In March 2014, as in January-March, foreign investment inflows in Lithuania were recorded: they amounted to 372.7 million litas and 1.8 billion litas respectively. In March, the inflows were driven by growth in monetary financial institutions' other investment liabilities and non-residents' investment in direct investment other capital, in January-March – by growth in general government portfolio investment liabilities.
In January-March 2013, an investment outflow (839 million litas) was recorded. In March 2014, the negative flow of Lithuania's investment abroad (1.5 billion litas) suggested growth in investment abroad; it was driven by growth in the MFI sector's other investment foreign assets. In February 2014, growth in Lithuania's investment abroad (1.2 billion litas) was recorded, while in January it decreased (154.6 million litas). In January-March 2014, Lithuania's investment abroad was about two times higher year on year.
The flow of non-repayable capital transfers to Lithuania (money of the European Union's –EU support funds for financing investment projects) amounted to 119.1 million litas in March 2014 and 342.8 million litas in January–March 2014, the Statistics Department of the Bank of Lithuania said in a statement.
In January-March 2013, the flow of these transfers stood at 56.1 million litas.
The current transfers balance surplus of Lithuania stood at 369.7 million litas in March 2014 and 374.5 million litas in February. In January – March 2014, the current transfers balance surplus (1.1 billion litas) increased by 734.8 million litas, or 2.8 times.
Transfers from European Union (EU) support funds amounted to 226 million litas, while workers' remittances from abroad – 405.3 million litas in March 2014. Month on month, transfers from EU support funds contracted by 34.6%, while workers' remittances from abroad – by 7.8%. In January-March 2014, transfers from EU support funds amounted to 951.9 million litas, while workers' remittances from abroad – 1.2 billion litas. Year-on-year, both transfers from EU support funds and workers' remittances from abroad boosted by 1.5 times.
In March 2014, Lithuania's calculated contributions to the EU budget amounted to 118.8 million litas, while during three months – 578.3 million litas. Workers' remittances from Lithuania stood at 160.1 million litas in March and 475.9 million litas in January–March. In January–March 2013, these flows amounted to 525.7 million litas and 530.3 million litas respectively.
