According to the mayor of Vilnius, cars should be taxed by criteria of CO2 emissions.
"These are environmental taxes and income should be used for improvement of transport infrastructure, and not like now, when the Government plans to use them it for its own needs," said Zuokas.
According to the mayor, the tax could be paid together with the compulsory roadworthiness test.
There are more than 1.6 million cars in Lithuania at present.
As reported, on Wednesday, the Pension Compensation Working Group ended its work and presented concrete proposals over the tax on cars and motorcycles and the increase in excise duty.
It is planned that the car tax will bring LTL 200 million (EUR 57 million) to state's budget every year. It should be paid based on a declaration sent to the State Tax Inspectorate (VMI) by the owner of a car.
It is planned to calculate the fee according to engine capacity. Owners of motorcycles with an engine capacity of 0.5 liter would pay LTL 70 (EUR 20) per year, 0.501-1 liter – LTL 130 (EUR 37), 1.001-1.5 liters – LTL 190 (EUR 54) and 1.5 and more – LTL 250 (EUR 72).
Owners of cars with an engine capacity of 1.5 liters would pay LTL 90 (EUR 25), 1.501-2 liters – LTL 170 (EUR 49), 2.001-2.5 liters – LTL 240 (EUR 69), 2.501-3 liters – LTL 310 (EUR 89), 3.001-3.5 liters – LTL 380 (EUR 109), 3.501-4 liters – LTL 450 (EUR 129), 4,001-5 liters – LTL 520 (EUR 150) and 5 and more – LTL 590 (EUR 170).
