"Such requirements are dictated by our customers who need effective services. Under competitive conditions and services at the terminal we project to transport via Vilnius around 100 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) per week," said Evaldas Zvirblis, Head of MSC Vilnius.
Lithuanian Railways is currently constructing Vilnius Public Logistics Centre (VLC) where MSC Vilnius plans to establish a dry port, so that the customers can use services under the same conditions as in Klaipeda seaport. Companies located at VLC as well as any company in the region will be able to have their goods transported through VIT to any destination in the world.
VIT is being built near Vaidotai railway station through which container trains Vikingas, Sestokai Express, Saule and Merkurijus travel constantly. Lithuanian Railways will seek that VIT is operational by 1 January 2015. After construction is completed, container transportation services using railways between Klaipeda seaport and VIT will be offered.
Stasys Dailydka, General Manager of Lithuanian Railways, says that VIT will bring the best of all means of transportation, providing economy, speed, flexibility and wide range of destinations.
The cost of Vilnius Intermodal Terminal is LTL 110 million (EUR 32 million). As much as 85% of the cost is covered by the EU Cohesion Fund. It is estimated that the project's return will be three times greater and will constitute more than LTL 370 million (EUR 107 million), taking into account the benefit that more cargo will be transported using more ecological and economical transport, reducing the number of vehicles on the road.
