"We did not make much progress in the past few days due to bad weather, which keeps us from working any faster. It is hard to specify the harvested area but it is not large. We can probably talk about 20-25%. We used to be about finished with the harvesting by this time but this year we're just starting," Ausrys Macijauskas, chairman of the Lithuanian Grain Growers' Association, told BNS.
In his words, the storms that have been ravaging Lithuania over the past few weeks have so far had no effect on the quality of the crops. Macijauskas refused to say whether this year's crops would be bigger than they were last year, noting that the long-term average of about 5 million tons should be reached.
According to data provided by Statistics Lithuania, grain harvest stood at 5.71 million tons last year, which was a 12% decline from 2015.
Lithuanian grains are traditionally exported to Iran, countries in Northern Africa and Western Europe.
