The company said freight haulage this year grew by 6.5% to 28.99 million tons in the first seven months of 2017 year-on-year, while passenger traffic went up by 4% to 2.7 million people.
"Cooperation with railway companies, partners and clients of other countries has already had a positive effect. This year we managed to make better use of the potential of Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai. However, to achieve good results in the future, we should improve the company's competitiveness," Mantas Bartuska, LG CEO, said in a press release.
Over the first seven months of this year, exports cargo surged by 24.6%, imports freight went up by 2.6%, meanwhile transit via Lithuania accounted for 21.6%. The total number of international freight grew by 10.2% to 21 million tons. The volume on international routes was 7.98 million tons, a decline by 2% year-on-year, however, the railway company hopes to raise the traffic volumes during the grain transportation period.
A total of 6.3 million tons of cargo were transported across Lithuania's territory over the seven-month period, while imports accounted for the bulk of the cargo at 12.1 million tons.
