Of all cargos handled by the Baltic ports in the first six months of this year, 45.4% were reloaded in Latvia, 33.4% in Lithuania and 21.2% in Estonia.
Compared to the first six months of 2016, cargo turnover grew in Latvian, Lithuanian ports, but dropped in Estonian ports.
The cargo turnover of the Latvian ports rose 7% or 2.232 million tons to 33.989 million tons in January-June this year.
Meanwhile, Lithuanian ports raised cargo turnover by 2.2% or 547,900 tons to 24.955 million tons. In Estonia, the ports' annual cargo turnover fell 7,2% or 1.237 million tons to 15.874 million tons in January-June 2017.
The Lithuanian port of Klaipeda led other Baltic ports by cargo turnover in January-June this year, as it reloaded 20.597 million tons, up 2.9% from the first six months of 2016.
The Freeport of Riga was in second place with 17.512 million tons of cargo reloaded in January-June 2017, down 4.1% year-on-year, and another Latvian port, Ventspils, was third with 12.373 million tons, which was a 23.4% rise from the first six months of 2016.
The port of Tallinn ranked fourth with 9.948 million tons of cargo reloaded in the first six months of this year, down 7.1% from the same period last year.
In 2016, all Baltic ports together received and shipped 145.943 million tons of cargo, down 2.8% or 4.196 million tons from 2015. Of the total cargo turnover in Baltic ports last year, 43.2% were handled in Latvia, 33.8% in Lithuania and 23% in Estonia.
