Infrastructure is being created so that the Baltic Sea container terminal would operate successfully in Klaipeda port. Klaipeda State Sea Port Authority which is responsible for the development is building the needed 90-96 quays. The work on quays and dredging of the port are projected to be completed this year.
By developing the infrastructure Klaipeda State Sea Port Authority is aiming to increase the port's competitiveness and create favourable conditions for private investments. The construction will shape preconditions for cargo handling volumes to rise, thus ensuring profit for all participants in the logistics chain.
Construction of the container terminal is one of the major infrastructure development projects improving the quality of Klaipeda port.
Funds invested in the new container terminal will enable quality integration into European transport network and the developing Motorways of the Sea. It will also encourage the exporters and the importers to use the services of the port.
After dredging highest possible depths in the port will be reached, hence, assuring safety, maintaining cargo flows from Belarus and attracting new alternative transit cargo from Russia and other countries.
After the construction is complete, the operator of the terminal will be able to increase container handling volumes from 0.65 to 1.4 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) per year.
