According to Giedrius Kražauskas, the Chief Strategic Development Officer at Lithuanian Airports, the decisions to expand the parking lots was caused not only by the constantly increasing numbers of passengers at Vilnius Airport, but also by the wish to create a more convenient parking infrastructure for passengers and partners of the airport.
“The growing need for convenient parking near the passenger terminal made us decide to create parking spaces at the location of the old unused building at A. Gustaičio Street. Our partners will be able to use as many as 127 car parking spaces; in addition, 68 short-term parking spaces will be created at the same location. Four spaces at the parking lot are intended for electric cars,” says G. Kražauskas.
The Chief Strategic Development Officer at Lithuanian Airports notes that this decision will improve the aesthetic view of the passenger terminal approach areas. In this territory, utilities networks will be repaired and upgraded, a new video surveillance system, lighting, an awning for waiting passengers, benches, safe pedestrian tracks, and new green spaces as well as new parking lot management equipment will be installed.
The parking lot that will be built at the location of the old building will be beneficial not only for passenger car drivers. After this project is completed, six parking spaces for tourist and charter buses and a separate stop with an awning and five spaces for coaches and international passenger buses will be built. According to G. Kražauskas, due to the project, traffic flows will be reduced and traffic jams will be less frequent near the passenger terminal of Vilnius Airport.
It is planned that the construction of the parking lot will be completed on 30 September.
Another project of Vilnius Airport aiming at meeting the growing need for long-term parking is gaining momentum. It is planned that a multi-storey vehicle storage facility of four storeys and 32,000 sq. m will be built at the intersection of Rodūnios Road and Felikso Vaitkaus Street. It will provide storage space for 999 vehicles.
Lithuanian Airports issued a tender for the construction of the multi-storey car park at the beginning of April.
“We hope that the construction of the car park will begin in December 2017 and that it will be completed in November 2018. By implementing this project, we provide new car parking spaces and make sure that the passengers are comfortable as we plan that the multi-storey car park will have a lift, toilets, a waiting area, a bicycle storage, a luggage scale, and other services that are relevant for passengers. In addition, the nearby intersection will be renovated: a three-lane road and safe pedestrian crossings will be built and the cycle path will be extended,” the Chief Strategic Development Officer at Lithuanian Airports describes another project.
At the moment, Vilnius Airport has three short-term car parks and three long-term car parks as well as six parking lots for corporate clients. They provide parking spaces for 1073 vehicles in total.
