"We are currently finalizing the procedures for poultry and beef exports. I spoke with Japan's chief veterinary officer today and we hope that the procedures will be completed by March. (…) On bilateral grounds, the process is over. Lithuania has submitted documents and Japan is currently conducting an internal process to include Lithuania into relevant legal acts to allow imports of beef and poultry from the country," told Meilunas.
In his words, after the permit is in place, it will be up to Lithuanian companies to look for exports possibilities and partners.
Negotiations with Japan on exports of beef products were opened in 2013, and Lithuania's National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute was included in Japan's list of verified foreign analytical institutions a year later. In 2015, Japanese experts checked Lithuanian beef processing companies.
