As Lithuania imported the bulk of electricity in October, the average price on the country's market stood at 38.5 euros per kilowatt-hour (MWh), which is an increase by 13 % month-on-month but a decline by 32% year-on-year.
"In October, nine of 10 consumed kilowatt-hours were imported. On the markets of the countries of the Baltic Sea region, prices were gradually on the rise throughout the month. Temperatures were declining, the consumption rose, and the Nordic countries lacked production of cheap hydropower," Lithuania's power transmission system operator Litgrid said.
Last month, Lithuania imported 89% of the electricity it consumed, including 29% from Sweden, 24 from Latvia, Estonia and Finland, 7% from Poland and the remaining share from third countries. Power imports from Poland soared by a factor of nearly 11, while that from third countries nearly tripled.
