"Business is the driver of national prosperity. Successful business means strong Europe. To make Europe competitive in the world, we need to strengthen the Single Market and create a better environment for businesses," the President said.
Business conditions presently offered by European countries are not all favorable. The economic crisis has affected many companies and the Lithuanian Presidency will seek to restore EU competitiveness. The President pointed out that the elimination of energy islands and the creation of the internal EU energy market were among key measures to increase competitiveness. Europeans were paying too much for energy resources, she said.
Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that the Lithuanian Presidency and the European business shared the same priorities. Therefore working together in the common interest of all Europeans was critically important. According to the President, it was necessary to provide young people with professional career opportunities. To this end, businesses should contribute even more actively to dealing with youth unemployment.
Every six months the leaders of BusinessEurope meet with the leaders of the EU presiding member state to discuss topical items on the political and legislative agendas. They also present the expectations of European industries and businesses in respect of a specific presidency.
