On the Lithuanian Presidency priorities in the area of finance, Prime Minister noted that it is vital to further strengthen Europe's financial stability and competitiveness.
"We are still living in a time when it is necessary to consolidate the economic and financial stability in the eurozone and the whole EU. We will pay attention to the further development of the Banking Union, which will help financial institutions lay a sounder foundation. Moreover, we will focus on the implementation of the new EU Financial Framework. We have already drafted a work programme for the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN). During our Presidency, four Council meetings will be held, as well as one informal meeting that will take place on 13–14 September in Vilnius", said the Head of the Government.
Head of the IMF Christine Lagarde asked about Lithuania's intentions regarding the euro, adding that despite temporary difficulties in the eurozone, the IMF supported Lithuania's commitment. According to Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, the euro states proved they were capable of reforming and coping with emerging challenges.
"Our aim is to pursue and maintain sound fiscal and economic policies with all the rights and responsibilities. A practical scheme has been established, and preparation for smooth introduction of the euro has been coordinated at the highest governmental level", said the Prime Minister.
Lithuania has cooperated with the International Monetary Fund in all areas of its competence since 1992, and it appreciates IMF missions and recommendations.
