"Smart meters will open up new possibilities both for our customers and our professionals," Liudas Liutkevicius, CEO of ESO, said in a press release on Friday.
"Customers will be able to monitor their hourly energy consumption on a special screen or on the Gile self-service website, while our professionals will have access to more detailed information on the quality of energy supplied and the condition of the network," he said.
Other bidders included Poland's Apator, which did not meet the qualification requirements, and Lithuania-registered Ericsson Lietuva with a 387,000-euro bid and Elgama-Elektronika with an 815,500-euro bid.
Smart meters will be installed in Vilnius, Siauliai and Alytus and the districts of Silute, Trakai, Varena and Vilnius. Customers have been selected based on their average power consumption, the number of flats in their building and infrastructure.
Based on the results of the project, ESO will decide whether or not to continue with the installation of smart meters on a massive scale.
