The port handled 33.423 million tons of cargo in January through November 2014.
"We have an increase of 1.7 million tons for the 11 months. The largest growth was in liquid cargoes, at almost 29%, of which oil products account for 28%," Arvydas Vaitkus, the port's CEO, said at a news conference on Friday.
"However, there was a sharp fall in November. There are serious changes in oil prices in the market and this apparently has an impact both on our port and on Orlen's operations. But in any case, this year is going to be good. The volumes we had four to five years ago are coming back," he said.
According to Vaitkus, the handling of agricultural products rose by 8% in the 11 months year-on-year, with grain volumes alone up by 5.3%.
In November alone, cargo traffic through the port declined by 14.4% year-on-year to 2.84 million tons, figures from the Klaipeda port's authority showed on Friday.
The handling of liquid cargo at the port increased by 28.8% in the 11 months from a year ago to 9.111 million tons, but fell by an annual 12.6% to 744,800 in November.
Bulk cargo volumes edged down by 0.1% to 15.756 million tons in the 11 months and were down by 19.8% to 1.175 million tons last month. General cargo volumes fell by 2.9% to 10.269 million tons and by 7.8% to 917,300 tons, respectively.
