This decision was made during the World Lithuanian Sports Forum that was held on Sunday, the last day of the games. The decision to organize the next games in Kaunas rather than Klaipėda was embedded into the forum's resolution. During the forum itself, a lot of attention was paid to the importance of sports in fostering national identity and various national initiatives that would promote togetherness of Lithuanians living abroad.
The forum was addressed by the Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius: ´Imagine Lithuania as a big sports team. I am talking about Lithuania as our country including those Lithuanians who live abroad. We call it global Lithuania´.
The discussion was joined by Lithuanians living in Estonia, North America, Norway, United Kingdom, Poland, and Belarus. Everybody stressed the importance of these games, mostly because it enables stronger relations with Lithuania and other Lithuanians living in abroad. At the same time, the discussion emphasized the need to engage more young people. It was also decided that the games should be kept open only to amateur rather than professional sportsmen.
During the weekend of 27th-30th of June, 3400 people participated - sportsmen, trainers, and managers - from 20 countries. More than 700 Lithuanians came from abroad - the biggest delegation of 130 people was from the United States.
The games were formally opened this Friday by the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė. The participants were also welcomed by the Mayor of Klaipėda Vytautas Grubliauskas and the Vice-minister of the Interior Elvinas Jankevičius. After the procession, the fire of the games was lit by a former President Valdas Adamkus.
