March 22, 2023. Having won Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge for a city-wide open school concept in 2022, Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, has launched the innovative education project “Vilnius is a School.” It joins other city-wide initiatives, like an open café and open gallery, where urban spaces are given to the public for artistic expression, entrepreneurial endeavors, and in this case—education.

It is planned to implement the most modern system of registered baggage management and checking in the Baltic States for Vilnius Airport in the second part of the year 2024. The system applied exclusively to the departure terminal of Vilnius Airport will allow increasing the flow of customers being serviced, automating the majority of safety processes and at the same time reducing the risk of human faults by implementing the four-level system of examination of aviation safety.

In cooperation with the City of Vilnius and the Public Institution Vilniaus senamiesčio atnaujinimo agentūra (Vilnius Old Town Renovation Agency), the Central and East-Central European Secretariats of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) are organising a meeting in Vilnius on Monday, 20 March, at the Town Hall to discuss threats to historic towns and cities, their prevention, and crisis management measures. All this will eventually come together in a universal and relevant Emergency Relief Programme to be developed by the OWHC.

During the upcoming greening season, Vilnius Municipality plans to plant approximately 4,000 trees and 40,000 shrubs. Various companies have made plans to gift additional tens of thousands of trees to the city. This year, more streets and courtyards will be greened in the most densely populated areas of the capital city. In Naujamiestis, Šnipiškės, Žirmūnai and other districts, new tree lanes will be connected to green areas planted last year.

Not only does the city entice with full-on outside adventures in many of its parks and the surrounding nature, but also invites the visitors and residents to soak up the cultural, musical, and artistic delights that are part of the Vilnius 700th-anniversary program.

In order to improve and expand the road infrastructure in the areas of the Lithuanian-Polish border by 2024, approximately 13 km of border roads of national significance are planned to be repaired in the districts of Lazdijai and Kalvarija.

The names of members who will be sitting on the new Subcommittee on Public Health (SANT) were announced in plenary on Wednesday morning.
