Two Lithuanian companies and one German company will build a section of the European-gauge railway Rail Baltica from Kaunas' railway station to the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal under a contract worth 54.762 million euros. Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide, has recognized Vilnius as one of the ten most recommended places to visit in Europe in 2018. Ranked on the eighth place of the Best in Europe 2018 rating, presented today, Vilnius has been assessed together with such places as Provence (France) and Cantabria (Spain). The first place is dedicated to the exclusive food-culture-famous Italian Emilia Romagna region. Thunder Strike 2018, the largest national exercise in the history of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, is kicking off on Friday. Russian nuclear energy construction giant Rosatom and Lithuania's MG Baltic business group, owned by Darius Mockus, have joint interests in the upcoming multimillion project on the construction of Ignalina nuclear plant's disposal facility, the Lithuanian Seimas' Committee on National Security and Defense states after investigating business groups' influence on politics. One Lithuanian resident, aged 15 or older, consumed 12.3 liters of legal alcohol on average in Lithuania last year, 0.9 liters down from 13.2 liters in 2016, the latest figures from the Statistics Lithuania show. Butinge oil terminal, operated by oil processing and transportation company Orlen Lietuva, handled 2.819 million tons of oil in the first four months of 2018, up 1.2% from 2.785 million tons last year. A pilot project enabling 15,000 young people to travel around Europe by train this summer is to be rolled out by the EU Commission, acting on Parliament’s proposals. Intersurgical, an international medical device manufacturer that owns a disposable respiratory care product factory in Prabrade, not far from Vilnius, plans to invest around 10 million euros in a new production facility in Visaginas, an eastern Lithuanian town where the shutdown Ignalina nuclear power plant is located. Vilnius district marked the year 2017 with the successful implementation of projects, efficiently attracted investments for the well-being of residents, the modern and higher quality learning environment, successfully expanded infrastructure of social services, ensured quality of social services and favorably created business environment. |
