EducationThis week the first results of the general admission to the Lithuanian schools of higher education were announced: Vilnius University and Kaunas University of Technology are among the leaders, taking up 31% and 17% of university study market. Moreover, 21% of state-funded paces were offered for prospective KTU students (35% of state funded students were invited to study at VU). Experts of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have recommended that Lithuania should continue with its structural reforms to achieve process, with a focus on fundamental restructuring of the education sector. For several decades nicknamed a student capital, Kaunas is much more than just a second largest Lithuanian city. Lush parks, lively squares, cozy cafes and buzzing cultural life are making Kaunas more and more attractive not only as a travel destination, but also as a place to live. Also, refugees are often associated with a disease – headache, fever or cancer, a heavy load or a weapon. Although British media uses the most neutral metaphors related to refugees, no positive images were detected in either of the countries’ media analysed. This week the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education has published the results of study programmes’ accreditation for 2010–2016. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is among the leaders in Lithuania by the number of programmes accredited for a maximum of 6 years’ period. The International Bureau of Education (IBE-UNESCO) launched the first postgraduate Certificate In Curriculum Design and Development for Central-East Europe Central Asia together with VMU in Lithuania on 28 November. This will be followed by UNESCO IBE’s first postgraduate Diploma for the Arab States in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 4 December. Protest of the Polish community against the closure of Polish Philology in Vilnius2017-07-21, 11:39The Association of Poles in Lithuania and the Association of Polish Schools Teachers in Lithuania "Macierz Szkolna” express their dissatisfaction about the sudden interruption of the recruitment process for Polish philology at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences and turn to the highest Lithuanian authorities with a demand to restore the possibility to educate young people in this field of studies. “I was not sure what a work in Google may bring. I remember thinking: if I fail, I will at least have an impressive CV. However, 6 years after, I am still happy to work for the company”, says Aleksej Viktorcik. Aleksej, who graduated from Applied Mathematics in 2010, is working at Google office in Zurich, Switzerland. On June 7, professors and doctoral students of the Department of Natural Sciences of Klaipėda University went to a scientific conference, the 11th Baltic Sea Science Congress in Germany. Instead of the usual means of transport, KU scientists chose a voyage by the Baltic Sea on a tallship Brabander. From the fall of 2017, former Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) exchange student Viktoria Babenko from Ukraine plans to study in the European and International Business Law Master's programme. |
