PoliticsThe Labour Party of Lithuania has decided to open its 62nd unit. The unit will be established outside Lithuania – in Spain – and will become the party's third unit operating abroad. On 18 December Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė, deposited the instrument of ratification for the Arms Trade Treaty that will enter into force on 24 December. “Lithuania is very happy to join a constantly increasing number of countries that ratified the Arms Trade Treaty. We are particularly glad to join before it enters into force”, said Lithuania’s Permanent Representative. In an annual press conference held on 18 December 2014, Linas Linkevičius, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, identified deepening of relations with EU Eastern partners, consistent support to Ukraine, active membership of the UN Security Council and economic diplomacy efforts as priority activities in 2014. On the basis of the Constitution, and having regard to the decree of the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite, the Seimas has ratified the Treaty establishing the European Stability Mechanism signed by the euro area countries in Brussels in 2012 and amended in 2014, and the documents relating thereto. This Law received 82 votes in favour, with 1 vote against and 1 abstention. President Dalia Grybauskaitė is attending a European Council meeting. The focus of the meeting is on the economic situation in the European Union and measures to foster economic growth and investments. The Lithuanian Government has approved amendments to rules for the development and implementation of public private partnership projects (PPPs). MEPs will elect on Tuesday 16 December the new European ombudsman, whose task is to investigate complaints about maladministration by EU institutions. The only candidate for the post is the existing ombudsman, Emily O'Reilly from Ireland. The Seimas grants Lithuanian troops the mandate to take part in international operations in 2015–20162014-12-14, 13:59During its plenary sitting, the Seimas adopted a resolution (draft No XIIP-2477(2)), providing for the legal status in international operations in 2015–2016 of the military units of the Republic of Lithuania assigned to the NATO Response Force and EU Battlegroups and Lithuanian troops serving in NATO and EU military commands. The resolution was adopted by 83 votes in favour, with no votes against and one abstention. |
