The celebration of Labor Day in Lithuania is evaluated ambiguously. May 1 became a national holiday and a day off from work in Lithuania since 2001 – after the Parliament had rejected a veto of President Valdas Adamkus. The then President V. Adamkus claimed that May 1 associates for some people with the Soviet period, so it is not a celebration that unites the nation.
The supporters of this public holiday point that this day is also celebrated in the Western democracies.
- May 1 was obligatory feast associated with the communist regime, today and in the future it is a holiday associated with the Polish membership in the European Union – the President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski said today at European Picnic in the Warsaw Lazienki Park.
